If your main consideration is your budget, then yes. But if you need to replace it’s batteries, then opt for a bike which have a new battery installed as presently batteries constitute a good percentage of the cost. Remember, it can be nearly impossible to check the lifetime longevity remaining for the battery. So make your choice wise. Another advantage of buying a used electric bike is that you will pay less for insurance, tax etc. One drawback will be if the previous owner have maintained or used the bike poorly, then it might affect and minimize its durability, which in turn could be a potential loss for the buyer. If the e-bike is out of warranty, it will mean any additional maintenance and repair that comes up later is on you. So I would suggest you go in for a used e-bike only if you know the previous owner and have tested the e-bike prior to making a purchase or else go for a new bike if you want peace of mind.

That’s a great point and you are correct! Ebike batteries cost a small fortune to replace! I suppose also checking that the batter is also user-removable too. I know the new Mondraker ebikes have a built-in battery so a battery replacement would have to be performed at a Mondraker dealer.

A used e-bike will usually costs less than a new one and therefore attracts lower tax payments. But make sure of its warranty because any additional maintenance and repair that comes up later is on you.

Yeah, if you’re on a budget buying secondhand is probably the way to go. I purchased a few used bikes in my day, and yeah there is a risk with doing it, but in the long run, I haven’t had a lot of problems that I couldn’t fix myself.

It’s possible he purchased it via an online store? I could see tax being added for some sales like that.

Yes sometimes it is added so as to compensate seller’s profit margin.

For people planning to get their first E-Bike would advise them to get a new one. As second hand E-Bike might have few flaws and would need more maintenance. This might give them a bad experience about E-bikes. For experienced riders can go with Second hand E-Bike if the price is right.

If you get from known source, it would be good. Otherwise, if you buy worn down bike. You would regret buying an E-bike. It’s better to get from a friend or from a member from bike club. As these members constantly upgrade their bike and they also maintain their bikes well. So you won’t face any problems.

If it’s your first E-bike, would advise you to get a new bike. As you can fully enjoy and experience it, with out the fear of break downs. E-Bikes are becoming very affordable now. Go with entry level bikes and upgrade it after few months.

The battery is one of the most expensive parts of an eMTB and if that is defective in a second hand bike then it would become a cause of concern.
