I’m a bit on a budget and want to get my son a new bike. He said he would be fine with anything, but I am leaning towards getting him a mountain bike. I don’t intend to spend a whole bunch, because he isn’t going to use a mountain bike to actually ride the mountains or most trails. I expect him to use it for school mostly and to hang out with friends.

Down the road I will get him a better bike, probably one like mine so that we can go riding together. Anyway, any suggestions for good mountain bikes below £500?

[HEADING=3]Giant Talon 4 GE Mountain Bike would be a good choice. It comes with Shimano Tourney shifter, which is reliable and long-lasting. You can also choose between different wheel sizes: 27.5” and 29”. This would be an ideal choice for daily commute and to hangout with friends.[/HEADING]

The Schwinn Timber bike will give a smooth a comfortable ride whether you are on the road or cycling through trails, available in different sizes and with steel alloy frames, it guarentees a good ride on paved surfaces for a casual ride or even on gravel trails. Should be a good beginner option for your kid within your budget.

Mangoose Malus Fat bike would be great, if you like fat tires. It has 4” wide tyres, i think this is the widest tires available at this price range. Has a beast look. And is under £500.

Mongoose Switchback is an entry-level bike and it’s perfectly suitable for casual off-road rides. This bike comes with mechanical disc brakes and it has a lightweight, streamlined, and sleek aluminum frame painted in various attractive colors.

I second this. My cousin owns the same one, and he loves it. It’s great for younger kids and people who just want a cheap bike on the quick. If you want something better though, I’d skip mongoose.

You can go for Decathlon ST540 ROCKRIDER Mountain Bike, it has 27” wheels, Shimano Altus, and hydraulic disk brakes. It’s budget friendly and good for teens as it doesn’t need much maintanence.

Specialized Rockhopper 27.5 is outstanding all rounder, it’s a good MTB under £500. It has 27.5-inch wheels is only available in smaller sizes, but there is a 29-inch companion for taller riders. The drivetrain is a combination of Shimano and MicroSHIFT parts configured in a 2 x 8 setup.

Voodoo Aizan would be a good choice. It’s right on £500. It has 29” wheels and relaxed geometry, which is comfortable for riding. It’s an all-round good MTB.
