What are the advantages of mountain bike shoes? Learn everything you need to know in our comprehensive guide.

One important decision that every mountain biker must make is whether or not to invest in specialized mountain bike shoes. While many riders may be content with wearing regular athletic shoes, mountain bike shoes offer unique benefits that can enhance your biking experience. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the advantages of mountain bike shoes and help you decide if they are necessary for your biking adventures.

are mountain bike shoes necessary?

Improved Power Transfer

Mountain bike shoes are specifically designed with stiff soles that allow for efficient power transfer from your legs to the pedals. The rigid sole minimizes energy loss and maximizes the force applied to the pedals, allowing you to generate more power with each pedal stroke. This can result in increased speed and performance, especially when tackling challenging terrains or climbing steep hills. With regular athletic shoes, the soft soles may absorb some of the energy, leading to decreased efficiency and performance.

Superior Traction

Mountain bike shoes typically feature specialized rubber outsoles with aggressive tread patterns that provide superior traction on various terrains, including mud, rocks, and slippery surfaces. This allows you to maintain a firm grip on the pedals, even in challenging conditions, ensuring that your feet stay in place and reducing the risk of slipping off the pedals. Regular athletic shoes may not have the same level of traction, which can lead to decreased stability and control, particularly in technical sections of the trail.

Increased Comfort

Mountain bike shoes are designed to provide optimal comfort during long rides. They often come with features such as cushioned insoles, padded ankle collars, and adjustable closures that allow for a secure fit without causing discomfort or hotspots. The snug fit of mountain bike shoes also helps to prevent your feet from moving inside the shoe, reducing the risk of blisters or chafing. On the other hand, regular athletic shoes may not provide the same level of comfort, especially during prolonged rides or when navigating rough terrains.

Enhanced Protection

Mountain biking can be an extreme sport that exposes riders to various hazards, including rocks, roots, and branches. Mountain bike shoes typically offer increased protection compared to regular athletic shoes. They often have reinforced toe boxes and durable materials that can withstand impacts and protect your feet from injuries. Some mountain bike shoes also have ankle protection features, which can be beneficial in preventing sprains or twists. In contrast, regular athletic shoes may not provide the same level of protection, leaving your feet vulnerable to potential injuries.

Clipless Pedal Compatibility

Mountain bike shoes are often designed to be compatible with clipless pedals, which are a popular choice among serious mountain bikers. Clipless pedals allow you to securely attach your feet to the pedals, providing better control, efficiency, and stability. Mountain bike shoes typically have cleats that attach to the pedal, allowing for easy engagement and disengagement. However, it’s worth noting that clipless pedals and shoes may require a learning curve and practice to master, as they require a different technique for engaging and disengaging compared to regular pedals. If you’re not interested in clipless pedals, there are also mountain bike shoes that are compatible with flat pedals, providing a sticky rubber sole for maximum grip.

While mountain bike shoes may not be an absolute necessity for every rider, they do offer several benefits that can significantly enhance your mountain biking experience. Improved power transfer, superior traction, increased comfort, enhanced protection, and clipless pedal compatibility are some of the advantages that mountain bike shoes provide over regular athletic shoes. However, it’s important to consider your riding style, preferences, and budget when deciding whether or not to invest in mountain bike shoes. If you’re a casual rider who sticks to easy trails or prefers flat pedals, regular

SRAM has patented an all-new chainset featuring radical new machining to shave weight while increasing strength. The newly designed SRAM chainset was spotted in U.S patent USD0974240S1, with wording that links it to the GX family.

The arms appear to use SRAM’s current direct mount system for chainrings and DUB axle standard, but the arms themselves feature additional machining when compared to current SRAM GX crank arms with a central section completely removed to reveal a ‘window’ through the arm.

SRAM Patents new GX chainset with cut out to save weight and add strength

This should not only save a healthy portion of the weight from the arms but also help to improve stiffness while also improving the overall premium look and finish of the arms.

As SRAM X0 and X01 arms are carbon fibre, we expect this radical new SRAM crank arm design to first appear on GX-level bikes, but it may trickle down to NX and further in later years.

Our sources in the industry tell us that certain brands have already obtained these arms so we should expect these new SRAM GX crank arms to launch later in 2023.

If however, you cannot wait for lightweight cranks that feature a GX style, then you could look at U.S brand 5 Dev, whose machined arms take on the appearance of the current GX chainset if they had been completely machined to reveal the rear webbing. While beautiful and functional, the 5 Dev cranks are also vastly more expensive than anything we would expect from the SRAM GX family, with an RRP of $349.99.

Patents reveal FSA 13-Speed Wireless Groupset with Off-Road Capabilities and Unique Gear Range https://editmtb.com/fsa-13-speed-wireless-patent/ https://editmtb.com/fsa-13-speed-wireless-patent/#respond Mon, 27 Feb 2023 07:48:21 +0000 https://editmtb.com/?p=2508 Tien Hsin Industries, the parent company of FSA, has recently published two patents hinting at the possibility of a 13-speed wireless electronic groupset in the near future. The first patent describes a 10-48T 13-speed cassette with a wider gear range than any of Campagnolo's 13-speed cassettes and a unique gear spacing perspective. The second patent details a wireless electronic rear derailleur with a clutch mechanism and the ability for non-contact charging, making it an ideal fit for off-road use. Will this lead to the first FSA KFX mountain bike groupset? Let's dive into the details.

Tien Hsin Industries, the parent company of FSA, recently published two patents for a 13-speed wireless electronic groupset that could soon be on the market. The first patent, US11529827, describes a 13-speed cassette with a 10-48T sprocket arrangement, while the second patent, US11560200, outlines a wireless electronic rear derailleur with a clutch mechanism and non-contact charging.

FSA Parent Company Tien Hsin Industries Reveals Patents for 13-Speed Wireless Groupset with Unique Gear Range and Off-Road Features

The FSA 13-speed cassette would offer a gear range of 480%, which is wider than any of Campagnolo’s 13-speed cassettes, and wider than Rotor’s 1×13 gravel 10-46T. However, it is less than Rotor’s 10-52T MTB variant. The cassette features a tighter spacing between cogs than most modern wide-range cassettes, thanks to the extra cog, and has a more consistent 10-15% gradient throughout the rest of the cassette.

An exploded diagram of the cassette shows that the sprockets are manufactured in three separate blocks, which are fixed to one another via a multi-faceted, multi-stepped carrier or sprocket base, and a second adapter that threads onto a central region of the largest block. The cassette is sleeved onto the freehub, and the central and outboard sprockets are coupled to it via the sprocket base and second adapter in a press-fit arrangement.

FSA Parent Company Tien Hsin Industries Reveals Patents for 13-Speed Wireless Groupset with Unique Gear Range and Off-Road Features

The wireless electronic derailleur described in US11560200 has a clutch mechanism, which is referred to as the “damping member” in the patent. The damping member is a one-way bearing positioned between the derailleur’s main body and the cage assembly. The patent describes a second clutch mechanism integrated within the shifting portion of the derailleur to add lateral stability to the shifting mechanism. The shift motor is located on the outboard linkage of the derailleur’s parallelogram with force driven through meshed gears about the pivot.

The derailleur also has non-contact charging capacity, with removable rechargeable batteries or smaller batteries that can be charged through inductive charging. The wireless charging function is housed within an extra unit, and the patent document describes a wireless charging circuit, a coil, and rechargeable batteries.

FSA Parent Company Tien Hsin Industries Reveals Patents for 13-Speed Wireless Groupset with Unique Gear Range and Off-Road Features

The FSA 13-speed electronic drivetrain would offer a different perspective on gear spacing compared to other systems, and it is likely to find its home on some kind of racing-focused mountain bike or super adventurous drop-bar offering. While it is unclear when the drivetrain will be released, the patents offer an exciting glimpse into what could be the first FSA KFX mountain bike groupset.

Tien Hsin Industries’ two patents for a 13-speed wireless electronic groupset suggest that FSA could be releasing a KFX mountain bike groupset soon. The cassette offers a wider gear range than other 13-speed cassettes, and the derailleur has a clutch mechanism for lateral stability and non-contact charging capacity. The groupset is likely to be geared towards racing-focused mountain bikes or super adventurous drop-bar offerings, but it remains to be seen when it will be released. The patents offer an exciting glimpse into what could be the future of FSA groupsets.

SR Suntour Durolux 36 EQ R2C2 Review

And get this, you can tweak it to your heart’s desire! The air spring and damping adjustments give you the power to fine-tune this fork to your riding style and the terrain you’re on. The air spring is seriously impressive – it’s so smooth and consistent it’ll blow your mind. And the R2C2 damping system? Forget about it! It stands for “Rider-Tuned, Reduced-Friction Compression Circuit” and lets you fine-tune the low-speed compression and rebound damping for even more control. The reduced-friction circuit also makes the fork so buttery smooth and consistent; it’s insane!

The 15mm thru-axle is a game-changer, giving you unbeatable stiffness and stability. Plus, it’s super easy to pop the wheel off for maintenance or repairs, thanks to the quick-release lever.

And the hydraulic bottom-out system? It’s the cherry on top! It helps prevent harsh bottom-outs, even on the hardest impacts. This fork can handle anything you throw at it!

Maintenance is a breeze with the Durolux36 EQ R2C2. The sealed cartridge keep dirt and debris out, so you don’t have to service it too often. And adjusting the air spring and damping circuits is super simple, so you can keep the fork performing like a champ for years to come.

SR Suntour Durolux 36 EQ R2C2 Review: Set up

SR Suntour Durolux 36 EQ R2C2 Review

The best settings for the SR Suntour Durolux 36 EQ R2C2 fork will vary depending on the rider’s personal preferences, riding style, and the terrain they’re on. However, as a starting point, the following settings may work well for an 80kg rider:

  1. Air pressure: Start by setting the air pressure to around 110psi and adjust according to your preference for a firmer or softer ride.
  2. Rebound damping: Rebound damping controls how fast the fork returns after compressing. A good starting point for an 80kg rider would be to set the rebound damping to the middle setting. If the fork is bouncing too much, slow down the rebound damping, if it is not bouncing enough, speed it up.
  3. Low-speed compression damping: This setting controls the compression of the fork at slow speeds. For a more aggressive rider, start with a firmer low-speed compression damping setting, and for a more trail-oriented rider, start with a softer setting.
  4. Hydraulic bottom-out: The hydraulic bottom-out system helps prevent harsh bottom-outs. For an 80kg rider, start with the setting in the middle and adjust according to your preference for a firmer or softer bottom-out.

It’s important to note that these settings are just a starting point, and you may need to make adjustments based on your riding style, the terrain you’re on, and how the fork feels. The adjustability of the SR Suntour Durolux 36 EQ R2C2 fork is one of its strengths, so take advantage of it and experiment with different settings to find what works best for you.

What is SRAM AirWiz? SRAM Receives Bluetooth Certification For New Suspension tech https://editmtb.com/what-is-sram-airwiz/ https://editmtb.com/what-is-sram-airwiz/#respond Tue, 05 Oct 2021 20:21:00 +0000 https://editmtb.com/?p=769 Today the internet is alive with talk of the new SRAM Flight Attendant system, but SRAM has more wireless tech up its sleeve and it's called AirWiz!

While Shimano sticks with wires, SRAM has gone wireless, and the choice is paying off allowing for deeper integration between AXS components and the latest Flight Attendant suspension control. As exciting as Flight Attendant might be, many commentators are surprised that SRAM hadn’t bundled in ShockWiz tech.

If you don’t already know, ShockWiz is a small pressure sensor that can be fitted to any air shock or air-sprung fork. Once calibrated, the bike is ridden with ShockWiz installed and the black box of tricks monitors and records suspension usage. The information is synced with the App and gives riders suspension set-up suggestions.

The surprise with today’s Flight Attendant launch is that while the smart system can wirelessly control the front and rear suspension, it hasn’t been designed to aid with suspension set-up and tuning suggestions, but that’s not to say SRAM hasn’t worked on this tech.

Last week a forum user came across a listing for a new 2022 Trek Rail from an online store that listed one feature as SRAM AirWiz. Details were sparse on what AirWiz can do, but upon further investigation, we have uncovered a Bluetooth certification for the system.

The official certification lists that it is for both front and rear AirWiz and goes on to say:

The EUT will measure suspension air pressure and display it an app for bicycle use. It includes BLE and ANT+ Radios.

FCC

A Bluetooth system that measures suspension air pressure sounds a lot like ShockWiz to us, but AirWiz might just be a more polished version of the technology that is actually part of the front and rear suspension air-springs instead of an additional bolt-on component. Other than measuring air pressure, the certification doesn’t give any clue if AirWiz will also be able to suggest damper settings also.

Further online snooping reveals that at least certain 2022 Trek Rail ebikes will feature front and rear AirWiz as standard along with SRAMs TyreWiz. Looking at the available images of the bikes, it also appears that AirWiz is compatible with current generation RockShox forks. Flight Attendant will only come fitted to next-generation RockShox forks.

Bosch’s new smart system gives you all the same power and responsiveness with a new Bluetooth-connected LED remote and eBike Flow app that puts even more control and customisation at your fingertips;TyreWiz and AirWiz let you confirm that your tyres, fork and shock are at the right pressure at a glance. No more getting the pump or gauge out just to check

Google Search

With a Bluetooth certification and online stores listing AirWiz equipped bikes already, we expect an official launch will be coming very soon.
