Fovno Phantom CNC GXP Crankset – First Impressions

We’ve yet to install the Fovno Phantom crankset or the included bottom bracket but a visual inspection of the arms, axle, threads and accessories doesn’t show any areas of concern, and actually, the high quality of the machining surpasses what we expect from such an affordable product.

Each arm is CNC machined with the narrowest area, at the pedal thread, measuring just 14.01mm in width. Fovno has carefully removed any excess material from the front and rear surfaces, with the rear of the arm displaying a satisfying pattern where the lathe has passed across the material. This intricate machine work brings the weight of both crank arms and attached axle down to 540g for our 170mm sample. For comparison an alloy SRAM GX Eagle chainset weights around 555g and doesn’t have the same high-quality CNC finish.

Fovno produces both push-fit and BSA style bottom brackets and has supplied us with the threaded model. Each bearing cup boasts that quality CNC build and houses sealed bearing with plastic covers and internal O ring seals. How the bottom bracket lasts will be an interesting test especially on our grimy, mud-covered winter trails.

The packaging includes all the bolts and accessories needed to install either a direct mount chainring or optional spider for 104 BCD rings. These bolts, washers and spacers are usually where a manufacturer might try to save money, but the items that Fovno supply are either machined alloy or stainless steel! It’s really an eye-opener to see and hold such a well-made item that costs so little!

However the proof will be in the pudding, so they say, and what’s now needed is for us to mount the Fovno Phantom CNC crankset to a suitable bike for a thorough thrashing. Keep posted for updates, and keep a close eye on our Instagram account for bike build updates featuring this impressive chainset.
