Born from our passion and background in BMX, the Coal SCAB marks an exciting progression for Coal Bikes as we venture back into the realm of dirt jumping. Handcrafted in the UK, the SCAB was built to fulfil our own desire to get back on dirt jumps and trails and hone our skills.

With some success racing at the highest level of BMX, Coal Bikes founder and head frame builder Gavin White knows a thing or two about being airborne on 2 wheels, and so the SCAB features a slender frame constructed of steel with a contemporary geometry delivering optimum control and manoeuvrability giving you the confidence to push your limits.

The hand-welded double-butted Reynolds 631 front triangle of the SCAB is meticulously mated to a 4130 rear triangle to balance lightweight with hard-hitting durability. The low weight helps to build speed and pump landings and turns, giving the SCAB an addictive ride quality that will keep you at the trails all evening. It’s a bike that can handle anything you throw at it, ready for a fun session with your mates or hitting that one line you’ve been looking at all summer.

The SCAB’s geometry includes a 69-degree head angle and generous 430mm reach, giving riders a little more room up front for executing precise tricks. The short 382mm chainstay length makes the SCAB agile and easy to manual, while the horizontal dropouts make it simple for dialling in chain tension. Keeping things nice and simple, the SCAB gets a threaded BSA bottom bracket, 44mm headtube and 135mm rear hub spacing, plus external cable routing for a rear disc brake.

Riders have the option of either the UK-made Coal Scab frame, only priced at £900, or a complete bike build with top-notch components from fellow UK brand DMR priced at £1999. Customers also have the option to have their SCAB painted in the RAL colour of their choice so they have a bike that reflects their own style!

About Coal Bikes

I’m Gavin White, and for the past 26 years, I’ve been honing my welding skills, obsessing over perfection, and envisioning the ultimate mountain bike that reflects my own vision and expertise.

Growing up amidst the rugged landscapes of the East Midlands coal fields in the UK, I was surrounded by hard-working individuals who weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. Inspired by their resilience and determination, I chose the name “Coal Bikes” to pay homage to that strong work ethic. Just like the hardy coal miners, my bikes embody durability and toughness, purpose-built for riders who crave the thrill of conquering monumental challenges.

While I may have had my fair share of success as a competitive BMX racer back in the day, my passion these days lies in getting out into the woods and immersing myself in the world of mountain biking. And that’s precisely what Coal Bikes is all about. These bikes are meticulously crafted to ensure that every adventure in the wilderness becomes a joyous and exhilarating experience. You may spot some influences from my BMX roots in the design, but rest assured, these retro-inspired beauties possess all the modern-day performance you could ever desire.

Press Release

The development of the Privateer DJ101 began with a simple realisation that the fun doesn’t end when the trial does. Instead, we found ourselves drawn to the pump tracks and dirt jumps or sneaking off to the local skatepark during our lunch breaks to extend play.

Looking around the office, the passion for riding dirt jump bikes was palpable. Inspired by this collective enthusiasm, we created a bike that encapsulated what we cherished most about hitting the local riding spots with our mates.

Our aim for the Privateer DJ101 was to offer the same principles as our full-suspension bikes; a sorted frameset, confidence-inspiring geometry, and a no-nonsense build kit, all in a package ready to rip out of the box.

Privateer DJ101 Key Rider Benefits:

  • Confidence-inspiring geometry.
  • Lightweight hydroformed 6061-T6 alloy frame.
  • Horizontal dropouts with the option to run gears.
  • Gyro tab mounts.
  • Easy to maintain and rattle-free hose routing.
  • No nonsense build kit. Ready to rip out of the box.
  • Frame only or complete bike options.

Dialled Frame

The Privateer DJ101 is a feature-packed dirt jumper from the same people who brought you the awarding winning Privateer 161 enduro bike and 141 trail bike. It all starts with a custom hydroformed 6061-T6 aluminium frameset that gives the rider the best balance of high strength and durability while remaining low in weight and offering an extremely agile geometry.

With short chain stays and horizontal dropouts that offer 10mm of adjustment, the DJ101 is perfect for riders of all styles and abilities. Slam the rear wheel for flips and spins, or increase the length for improved high-speed stability on those big dirt jumps. Speaking of dropouts, we’ve made sure that the DJ101s are nice and chunky for those inevitable overshoots and cases, and with the included chain tensioners and integrated mech hanger, you have the choice to run the DJ101 as a single speed or with gears.

A 410mm reach provides stability on high-speed flow trails while giving plenty of room to still be playful when throwing whips and tricks, and the 69-degree head angle provides the perfect balance of quick steering response and confidence at speed.

Riders who have bar spins and tail whips in their repertoire will appreciate the DJ101s gyro tab mounts for infinite bar spins, while the secure external cable routing makes maintenance straightforward and the ride rattle-free.

For riders who chose to build their DJ101 from the frame up, we’ve kept things simple with a standard tapered head tube with a common headset for ease of compatibility with modern MTB forks while a threaded BB gives you the option to run MTB or BMX cranks.

And of course, we’re rolling on 26in wheels that are custom-built to handle the abuse this little ripper is capable of!

No Nonsense Build Kit

Like all Privateers, we’ve kitted the bike out with a well-considered build kit.

Up front, we have fitted the Manitou Circus Expert fork with 100mm of suspension travel and alloy stanchions to reduce weight. The Circus’ air spring and ABS damper are easy to tune so you can achieve your perfect setup.

Keeping you running fast and smooth is a pair of Vee Tire Co. XCV dirt jump tyres mounted to a  durable custom Privateer 26in dirt jump wheelset with a 20mm thru axle up front for accurate steering. With such a fast-rolling wheelset, and a dialled geometry, you need quality brakes to keep you in control, and so we’ve fitted powerful Clarks M2 dual piston hydraulic brakes that offer amazing performance.

Through months of in-house rider testing and working with our trusted OE partners, we are able to spec out the DJ101 with quality parts, all custom-made for Privateer. Everything fitted to the DJ101 is ready to rip right out of the box. From the comfortable high-rise bars to the durable single-speed chainset, the DJ101 is built to keep on riding even when the trail ends.
