Press Release

Born from our passion and background in BMX, the Coal SCAB marks an exciting progression for Coal Bikes as we venture back into the realm of dirt jumping. Handcrafted in the UK, the SCAB was built to fulfil our own desire to get back on dirt jumps and trails and hone our skills.

With some success racing at the highest level of BMX, Coal Bikes founder and head frame builder Gavin White knows a thing or two about being airborne on 2 wheels, and so the SCAB features a slender frame constructed of steel with a contemporary geometry delivering optimum control and manoeuvrability giving you the confidence to push your limits.

The hand-welded double-butted Reynolds 631 front triangle of the SCAB is meticulously mated to a 4130 rear triangle to balance lightweight with hard-hitting durability. The low weight helps to build speed and pump landings and turns, giving the SCAB an addictive ride quality that will keep you at the trails all evening. It’s a bike that can handle anything you throw at it, ready for a fun session with your mates or hitting that one line you’ve been looking at all summer.

The SCAB’s geometry includes a 69-degree head angle and generous 430mm reach, giving riders a little more room up front for executing precise tricks. The short 382mm chainstay length makes the SCAB agile and easy to manual, while the horizontal dropouts make it simple for dialling in chain tension. Keeping things nice and simple, the SCAB gets a threaded BSA bottom bracket, 44mm headtube and 135mm rear hub spacing, plus external cable routing for a rear disc brake.

Riders have the option of either the UK-made Coal Scab frame, only priced at £900, or a complete bike build with top-notch components from fellow UK brand DMR priced at £1999. Customers also have the option to have their SCAB painted in the RAL colour of their choice so they have a bike that reflects their own style!

About Coal Bikes

I’m Gavin White, and for the past 26 years, I’ve been honing my welding skills, obsessing over perfection, and envisioning the ultimate mountain bike that reflects my own vision and expertise.

Growing up amidst the rugged landscapes of the East Midlands coal fields in the UK, I was surrounded by hard-working individuals who weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. Inspired by their resilience and determination, I chose the name “Coal Bikes” to pay homage to that strong work ethic. Just like the hardy coal miners, my bikes embody durability and toughness, purpose-built for riders who crave the thrill of conquering monumental challenges.

While I may have had my fair share of success as a competitive BMX racer back in the day, my passion these days lies in getting out into the woods and immersing myself in the world of mountain biking. And that’s precisely what Coal Bikes is all about. These bikes are meticulously crafted to ensure that every adventure in the wilderness becomes a joyous and exhilarating experience. You may spot some influences from my BMX roots in the design, but rest assured, these retro-inspired beauties possess all the modern-day performance you could ever desire.

SRAM has patented an all-new chainset featuring radical new machining to shave weight while increasing strength. The newly designed SRAM chainset was spotted in U.S patent USD0974240S1, with wording that links it to the GX family.

The arms appear to use SRAM’s current direct mount system for chainrings and DUB axle standard, but the arms themselves feature additional machining when compared to current SRAM GX crank arms with a central section completely removed to reveal a ‘window’ through the arm.

SRAM Patents new GX chainset with cut out to save weight and add strength

This should not only save a healthy portion of the weight from the arms but also help to improve stiffness while also improving the overall premium look and finish of the arms.

As SRAM X0 and X01 arms are carbon fibre, we expect this radical new SRAM crank arm design to first appear on GX-level bikes, but it may trickle down to NX and further in later years.

Our sources in the industry tell us that certain brands have already obtained these arms so we should expect these new SRAM GX crank arms to launch later in 2023.

If however, you cannot wait for lightweight cranks that feature a GX style, then you could look at U.S brand 5 Dev, whose machined arms take on the appearance of the current GX chainset if they had been completely machined to reveal the rear webbing. While beautiful and functional, the 5 Dev cranks are also vastly more expensive than anything we would expect from the SRAM GX family, with an RRP of $349.99.

Reeb Cycles Unveils the Steezl: A 155mm-travel Enduro Bike with a 3D-printed Bottom Bracket Cluster https://editmtb.com/first-look-reeb-cycles-steezl-3d-printed-steel-bike/ https://editmtb.com/first-look-reeb-cycles-steezl-3d-printed-steel-bike/#respond Mon, 27 Feb 2023 08:03:51 +0000 https://editmtb.com/?p=2521 Reeb Cycles, a boutique mountain bike company based in Lyons, Colorado, has unveiled the Steezl, a new enduro bike that uses 4130 chromoly tubing and 3D-printed frame components. The bike offers 155mm of rear travel, and can be run as a 29er or with a mullet set-up.

When it comes to new mountain bikes, it often feels like every release is just a slightly different take on the same old carbon fibre, high-pivot design. That’s why it’s refreshing to see a company like Reeb Cycles take a different approach with their latest offering, the Steezl.

The Steezl is a 155mm-travel enduro bike that eschews carbon fibre in favour of 4130 chromoly tubing and 3D-printed frame components. The result is a bike that stands out from the crowd with its clean lines and simple design.

Reeb Cycles Unveils the Steezl: A 155mm-travel Enduro Bike with a 3D-printed Bottom Bracket Cluster

One of the most notable features of the Steezl is its versatility. The bike can be run as a 29er or with a mullet set-up thanks to a set of flip-chips, and it’s designed for 160mm to 170mm-travel forks. Additionally, Reeb is offering the Steezl in five sizes, from small to double-extra-large, with two different rear-end lengths and the option to choose between longer or shorter chainstays.

But the Steezl isn’t just about looks and customization options. Reeb has put a lot of thought into the bike’s frame and suspension design to ensure that it performs well on the trails. The Horst-link suspension layout, which uses an aluminium seat and chainstays, has been tweaked from the previous Sqweeb model to improve pedalling performance and reduce kickback. The kinematics have been honed to create a smooth and consistent pedalling experience whether you’re climbing up a fire road or blasting through a scree field at race speed.

Reeb Cycles Unveils the Steezl: A 155mm-travel Enduro Bike with a 3D-printed Bottom Bracket Cluster

Reeb has also utilized 3D-printing technology in the construction of the Steezl’s bottom bracket cluster, resulting in a part that is both lighter and stronger than it would be if it had been machined instead.

Of course, all this technology and design doesn’t come cheap. The Steezl will be available in April 2023 with complete builds starting at $6,695 USD. If you prefer to build up your own bike, you can opt for the frame and shock for $3,795 USD or the chassis kit for $4,995 USD.

Ultimately, whether the Reeb Steezl is worth the investment will depend on your individual preferences and priorities. If you value a bike that stands out from the crowd, offers versatility and customization options, and has a simple and clean design, the Steezl may be worth considering. However, if you’re looking for a bike with more bells and whistles or a lower price point, you may want to keep shopping around.

Patents reveal FSA 13-Speed Wireless Groupset with Off-Road Capabilities and Unique Gear Range https://editmtb.com/fsa-13-speed-wireless-patent/ https://editmtb.com/fsa-13-speed-wireless-patent/#respond Mon, 27 Feb 2023 07:48:21 +0000 https://editmtb.com/?p=2508 Tien Hsin Industries, the parent company of FSA, has recently published two patents hinting at the possibility of a 13-speed wireless electronic groupset in the near future. The first patent describes a 10-48T 13-speed cassette with a wider gear range than any of Campagnolo's 13-speed cassettes and a unique gear spacing perspective. The second patent details a wireless electronic rear derailleur with a clutch mechanism and the ability for non-contact charging, making it an ideal fit for off-road use. Will this lead to the first FSA KFX mountain bike groupset? Let's dive into the details.

Tien Hsin Industries, the parent company of FSA, recently published two patents for a 13-speed wireless electronic groupset that could soon be on the market. The first patent, US11529827, describes a 13-speed cassette with a 10-48T sprocket arrangement, while the second patent, US11560200, outlines a wireless electronic rear derailleur with a clutch mechanism and non-contact charging.

FSA Parent Company Tien Hsin Industries Reveals Patents for 13-Speed Wireless Groupset with Unique Gear Range and Off-Road Features

The FSA 13-speed cassette would offer a gear range of 480%, which is wider than any of Campagnolo’s 13-speed cassettes, and wider than Rotor’s 1×13 gravel 10-46T. However, it is less than Rotor’s 10-52T MTB variant. The cassette features a tighter spacing between cogs than most modern wide-range cassettes, thanks to the extra cog, and has a more consistent 10-15% gradient throughout the rest of the cassette.

An exploded diagram of the cassette shows that the sprockets are manufactured in three separate blocks, which are fixed to one another via a multi-faceted, multi-stepped carrier or sprocket base, and a second adapter that threads onto a central region of the largest block. The cassette is sleeved onto the freehub, and the central and outboard sprockets are coupled to it via the sprocket base and second adapter in a press-fit arrangement.

FSA Parent Company Tien Hsin Industries Reveals Patents for 13-Speed Wireless Groupset with Unique Gear Range and Off-Road Features

The wireless electronic derailleur described in US11560200 has a clutch mechanism, which is referred to as the “damping member” in the patent. The damping member is a one-way bearing positioned between the derailleur’s main body and the cage assembly. The patent describes a second clutch mechanism integrated within the shifting portion of the derailleur to add lateral stability to the shifting mechanism. The shift motor is located on the outboard linkage of the derailleur’s parallelogram with force driven through meshed gears about the pivot.

The derailleur also has non-contact charging capacity, with removable rechargeable batteries or smaller batteries that can be charged through inductive charging. The wireless charging function is housed within an extra unit, and the patent document describes a wireless charging circuit, a coil, and rechargeable batteries.

FSA Parent Company Tien Hsin Industries Reveals Patents for 13-Speed Wireless Groupset with Unique Gear Range and Off-Road Features

The FSA 13-speed electronic drivetrain would offer a different perspective on gear spacing compared to other systems, and it is likely to find its home on some kind of racing-focused mountain bike or super adventurous drop-bar offering. While it is unclear when the drivetrain will be released, the patents offer an exciting glimpse into what could be the first FSA KFX mountain bike groupset.

Tien Hsin Industries’ two patents for a 13-speed wireless electronic groupset suggest that FSA could be releasing a KFX mountain bike groupset soon. The cassette offers a wider gear range than other 13-speed cassettes, and the derailleur has a clutch mechanism for lateral stability and non-contact charging capacity. The groupset is likely to be geared towards racing-focused mountain bikes or super adventurous drop-bar offerings, but it remains to be seen when it will be released. The patents offer an exciting glimpse into what could be the future of FSA groupsets.

Is it a cross-country bike, is it a down-country bike, or is it neither? Our sources tell us that Commencal is set to launch the Commencal Tempo trail bike tomorrow.

With 120mm of rear wheel travel, you would think that the Commencal Tempo is a bike set firmly into the new down-country sub-category of bikes, but we’ve been told that ‘down-country’ is a dirty word in Andorra and that the Tempo is very much a trail bike.

Not a great deal is known about the 2023 Commencal Tempo, which is hardly surprising as it’s not due to launch until tomorrow 29th November, but what we have seen from athlete’s social media posts is a short travel bike roughly based on the design of the Prototype Enduro bike the Commencal Enduro Project EWS team raced throughout the 2022 season.

Being a Commencal, there isn’t a thread of carbon fibre in sight on the Tempo’s frame. The Andorran-based bike maker has instead stuck with alloy for the front and rear triangles, plus the two CNC links that connect the two together. The new frame follows the signature look of the Commencal Meta, only with a slightly bent top-tube to accommodate even more standover height.

Commencal athletes have been training on, testing and even racing the Commencal Tempo all season, and we have seen builds with 120mm RockShox SID forks, but we expect production models will come with 130-140mm travel forks.

We also expect a highly polished launch video for the new Commencal Tempo trail bike, so watch this space for more details coming tomorrow.

First Look: Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 Ebike Specific Shoes https://editmtb.com/first-look-fizik-terra-ergolace-x2-ebike-specific-shoes/ https://editmtb.com/first-look-fizik-terra-ergolace-x2-ebike-specific-shoes/#respond Fri, 24 Sep 2021 12:57:21 +0000 https://editmtb.com/?p=623 The boom in eMTB and eBike sales has meant a surge in ebike specific products, but what do the Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 ebike specific shoes offer riders a standard shoe won't?

The post First Look: Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 Ebike Specific Shoes appeared first on Edit MTB.

]]>

Ebikes, electric bikes or eMTB, call them what you will but the truth is that these powerful and heavy assisted bikes do require specialized components and equipment. Sure it is easy to scoff at the idea of eMTB specific components, but with ebike weights hovering around 23-24kg mark it’s obvious that tougher tyres, strong wheels and perhaps eMTB specific suspension are necessary.

Fizik Terra Ergolace X2

But what about eMTB specific clothing?

While there are ebike-specific items we can all agree on, there are a few grey areas. Would you buy eBike specific shorts? EMTB gloves? What about ebike specific shoes?

Fizik certainly hopes there is a market for ebike shoes, as that’s exactly what the Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 flat shoes are meant to be, a flat shoe with features and design elements that make them perfect for eMTB riders.

So what are these eMTB ready features?

A scan of the Fizik website doesn’t really cement the idea that these shoes were solely made for ebike riders, and let’s be honest there is nothing stopping any flat pedal rider from running these shoes, but there are features that eMTB riders will appreciate.

Fizik Terra Ergolace X2

The eMTB specific characteristics really focus on the sole and tread design of this shoe, with the Fizik team paying particular attention on the stiffness and level of traction on offer. Starting with stiffness, Fizik has its own stiffness index, with a higher number meaning a stiffer shoe. Obviously clipped in/SPD shoes get the highest numbers whereas flat shoes get lower stiffness index measurements. The Terra Ergolace X2 has a rating of 3 which is slightly stiffer than the Tensor DH shoe, but significantly more supple than a level 7 Tempo road shoe.

The fact the Terra Ergolace X2 is slightly stiffer than an enduro or gravity shoe actually makes a lot of sense. An eMTB by its very nature should be able to ride up most climbs that would have you pushing on a standard MTB and because you shouldn’t need to walk in them as often, Fizik could add a little stiffness to them for increased pedalling efficiency. With this in mind, Fizik didn’t want to make them too difficult to walk in so a level 3 rating gives a good compromise of pedalling performance and walking comfort.

Take a look beneath the Terra Ergolace X2 and the widely spaced tread design promises plenty of mechanical grip with ample room for pedal pins to be located and locked between each knob. The tread design is deeper at the toe for better hike-a-bike traction, but the overall pattern is much more aggressive and off-road friendly than say a Five Ten. This again is part of the eMTB specific magic. You see, although an eMTB can climb up the most challenging hills, it does mean that those climbs you can’t pedal up must be exceptionally difficult, muddy or loose, and so good shoe traction is very much welcome. The deep tread of the Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 should provide plenty of support on the steeps when walk mode is running at full gas.

As for the rest of the shoe, well the outsole and lace design are pretty much identical to that found on the Fizik Gravita shoe with a padded toe box area for protection but with additional side padding.

Fizik uses its Ergolace pattern that cradles the foot for a secure fit. The simple lace-up design keeps the shoe in place, is easy to adjust and is cleverly angled outward, away from your eMTB motor, chainring and chain. There is also a simple elasticated band on the tongue to keep lace loops from being gobbled up by greedy drivetrains.

Compared to some shoes, the Fizik is a very slim shoe and despite the addition of PU laminated reinforcement, it avoids that bulky skate shoe look. The lack of chunky material gives the Terra Ergolace X2 a second-skin-like level of fit and creates a shoe that is not only cool and comfortable but one that dries quickly too.

Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 Just for eBikers?

Although the Terra Ergolace X2 might be aimed at eBike riders, there is no reason mountain bikers and cyclists, in general, couldn’t ride in them. In fact, riders wanting a flat shoe with a tread pattern that’s a little more versatile in varied terrain should certainly keep them in mind.

Fizik Terra Ergolace X2

We’ll be putting the Fizik Terra Ergolace X2 flat shoe through their paces over the next few months and publishing a review once we come to a conclusion on these eMTB ready clogs.

In the meantime, if you have any questions head to our forum and join the discussion about these, and other ebike specific products.

Fovno Phantom CNC GXP Crankset – First Impressions

We’ve yet to install the Fovno Phantom crankset or the included bottom bracket but a visual inspection of the arms, axle, threads and accessories doesn’t show any areas of concern, and actually, the high quality of the machining surpasses what we expect from such an affordable product.

Each arm is CNC machined with the narrowest area, at the pedal thread, measuring just 14.01mm in width. Fovno has carefully removed any excess material from the front and rear surfaces, with the rear of the arm displaying a satisfying pattern where the lathe has passed across the material. This intricate machine work brings the weight of both crank arms and attached axle down to 540g for our 170mm sample. For comparison an alloy SRAM GX Eagle chainset weights around 555g and doesn’t have the same high-quality CNC finish.

Fovno produces both push-fit and BSA style bottom brackets and has supplied us with the threaded model. Each bearing cup boasts that quality CNC build and houses sealed bearing with plastic covers and internal O ring seals. How the bottom bracket lasts will be an interesting test especially on our grimy, mud-covered winter trails.

The packaging includes all the bolts and accessories needed to install either a direct mount chainring or optional spider for 104 BCD rings. These bolts, washers and spacers are usually where a manufacturer might try to save money, but the items that Fovno supply are either machined alloy or stainless steel! It’s really an eye-opener to see and hold such a well-made item that costs so little!

However the proof will be in the pudding, so they say, and what’s now needed is for us to mount the Fovno Phantom CNC crankset to a suitable bike for a thorough thrashing. Keep posted for updates, and keep a close eye on our Instagram account for bike build updates featuring this impressive chainset.
